Description
Grewelthorpe, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish, in Kirkby Malzeard parish, W. R. Yorkshire. The village stands near the river Ure, 3 miles S of Masham railway station, and 7 NW of Ripon, has picturesque environs, and is notable for cream cheese. The township includes also Rexmoor hamlet, and has a post office under Ripon; money order and telegraph office, Kirkby Malzeard. Acreage, 4394; population, 440. Near Backfall there is a stream with a series of beautiful cascades, amidst picturesque surroundings, which attracts many visitors in the summer months. Stone is largely quarried. The ecclesiastical parish is less extensive than the township, and was constituted in 1848. Population, 412. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £147 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Masham. The church is very good, and there is a Wesleyan chapel.
