Description
Dent, a small town, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in W. R. Yorkshire. The town stands on the river Dee, near the boundary with Westmorland, and has a station with telegraph on the M.R., 253 miles from London, and a post and money order office under Sedbergh (R.S.O.) There are also a church, four dissenting chapels, and a grammar school. The parish includes also the hamlets of Deepdale, KirthwaitCy South-Lord-Land, North-Lord-Land, and Lenacre. Acreage of township, 20,890; population, 1131; of ecclesiastical parish, 811. Most of the land is commonage or pasture. Dent Crag marks the meeting-point of Yorkshire, Westmorland, and Lancashire. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Eipon; net value, £165 with residence. Patrons, 24 sidesmen. The church is ancient. The grammar school has £70 from endowment, and other charities £200.
