Darrington, West Riding

Description
Darrington, a village, a township, and a parish in the W. R. Yorkshire. The township lies adjacent to the Knot-tingley and Doncaster railway, 2 miles S of Knottingley railway station, and 3 SE of Pontefract. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Pontefract. Acreage of township, 3111; population, 525; of the ecclesiastical parish, which includes Went, 815. The parish contains also the township of Stapleton and the village of Wentbridge. Darrington Hall is the seat of the Sotheron-Estcourt family. The living is a vicarage, with that of Wentbridge annexed, in the diocese of York; joint net value, £352 with residence. Patron, the Archbishop of York. The church, which contains Norman, Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular work, has been well restored by Sir Arthur Blomfield. A new lych-gate, designed by the same architect, was erected in 1893. There are various charities.
