Description
Crigglestone, a village and township in Sandall-Magna parish, W. E. Yorkshire, on the river Aire and the Wakefield and Barnsley railway, 3 miles SSW of Wakefield. The village has a railway station, two churches, Baptist, Wesleyan, Primitive, and New Connexion Methodist chapels, almshouses, and a post and money order office under Wakefield; telegraph office, Wakefield. The township comprises the villages of Calder Grove, Chapelthorpe, Dennington, Dirtcar, Hall Green, Painthorpe, and part. of New Miller Dam. Acreage, 3130; population, 2862. There are collieries, an extensive paper mill, breweries, malt-kilns, and a tannery in this township.
