Description
Burton-in-Lonsdale, a village and township in Thornton-in-Lonsdale parish, W. R. Yorkshire, on the river Greta, adjacent to the M.R., 1/2 mile from Ingleton station on the L. & N.W.R. and M.R. There is a post and money order office under Kirkby Lonsdale; telegraph office, Ingleton. Acreage of township, 1558; population, 589. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £275 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Thornton. The church was built and endowed at the sole expense of T. Thornton, Esq., in 1870. There are a Wesleyan chapel and schools endowed with £350 yearly, a cotton mill, and several potteries in this township.
