Description
Brough, a township in Catterick parish, in the N. R. Yorkshire, on the river Swale, 5 miles ESE of Richmond, formerly a Roman settlement. Acreage, 1177 ; population, 105. An ancient hospital stood here, founded about the time of Edward I. Brough Hall formerly belonged to the family of De Burgh, but is now the seat of the Lawsons. There is a beautiful Roman Catholic chapel near the hall, built in 1837 by Sir William Lawson. 268
