Description
Strensham, a village and a parish in Worcestershire, on the river Avon and the borders of Gloucestershire, 2 1/2 miles S of Defford station on the M.R., 4 E of Upton-on-Severn, 5 SW of Pershore, and 5 N of Tewkesbury. There is a post office under Tewkesbury; money order office, Tewkesbury; telegraph office, Defford railway station. Acreage, 1967; population, 232. Strensham Court, the seat of the lord of the manor, is a handsome modern mansion. The manor belonged for centuries to a branch of the Russell family, but their castellated mansion, erected in the time of Richard II., was destroyed in the Civil War. There are nine almshouses, founded and endowed in 1697 by Sir Francis Russell, Bart. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Worcester; gross value, £243 with residence. The church is Decorated and Perpendicular, and contains remains of a rood screen, a Norman font, and memorials of the Russell family and of Samuel Butler, the author of " Hudibras," who was born in the village.
