Holt, Worcestershire

Description
Holt, a village and a parish in Worcestershire. The village stands on the river Severn, 6 1/2 miles NNW of Worcester, and 6 1/2 W of Droitwich, with a post office, of the name of Holt Heath, under Worcester; money order and telegraph office, Ombersley. The parish includes also Holt Heath hamlet and Little Witley chapelry. Acreage, 3017; population, 469. The Earl of Dudley is lord of the manor. Holt Castle is a fine ancient baronial mansion with lofty embattled tower, was formerly the seat of the Warwicks, the Beauchamps, the Bromleys, and the Foleys. The mansion, with the exception of the tower, was rebuilt in 1550, and restored in 1868. There is a bridge over the Severn. A piece of Roman pavement, 3 feet by 2, was found here in 1848. The living is a rectory, united with the chapelry of Little Witley, in the diocese of Worcester; net value, o£338 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Dudley. The church is Norman, was restored in 1861, and contains a Norman font, and monuments of the Beauchamps, Bromleys, Foleys, and other families.
