Hindlip or Hinlip, a parish in Worcestershire, 1 mile E of Fernhill Heath station on the G.W.R., and 3 miles NE of Worcester. Post town, Worcester; money order and telegraph office, Fernhill Heath. Acreage, 1363; population of the civil parish, 240; of the ecclesiastical, 188. Hindlip Hall, the seat of Lord Hindlip, stands on an eminence in a well-wooded park, with extensive views, and is a square edifice in the Italian style, with two wings. It stands on the site of an ancient mansion built by John Habingdon or Habington, one of whose descendants (in 1606) concealed here six of the chief conspirators of the gunpowder plot, while his wife wrote to her brother, Lord Monteagle, the letter which led to its detection. The manor passed to the Viscounts Southwell, and subsequently to the Allsopp family, now Barons Hindlip. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Worcester; net value, £170 with residence. Patron, Lord Hindlip. The church is Norman, was restored and enlarged in 1864, and again much beautified in 1889 at a cost exceeding £6000, and contains several monuments and tablets.
