Melchet Park, Wiltshire

Melchet Park, a parish in Wiltshire, 6 miles from Romsey station on the L. & S.W.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Whiteparish. Acreage, 830; population, 53. It was formerly a royal forest, was purchased in 1783 by Alexander Baring, afterwards Lord Ashburton; contains a mansion on an elevated site, commanding an extensive and charming view; and has on an eminence a Hindoo temple erected in 1800 after designs by Daniell to the memory of Warren Hastings.
