Description
Froxfield, a village and a parish in Wiltshire. The village stands, near the Kennet and Avon Canal, Wilts, 3 1/2 miles W of Hungerford station on the G.W.R., and has a post office under Hungerford; money order and telegraph office, Huo,-gerford. The parish includes the tithings of Hughditch, .Oakhill, and Rudge. Acreage, 2291; population, 390. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury; gross value, £245 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Windsor. The church is very good. The Duchess of Somerset'salmshouses here were founded in 1686, form an oblong quadrangle surrounding a court, with a small chapel in the interior, gave maintenance to thirty widows of clergymen and twenty widows of laymen, and have a very large endowed income.
