Chilmark, Wiltshire

Description
Chilmark, a village and a parish in Wilts. The village stands near the Roman road to Bath, 2 1/2 miles WNW of. Dinton station on the L. & S.W.R., and 4 E of Hindon, and has a post office under Salisbury; money order and telegraph office, Tisbury. The parish includes also the tithing of Ridge. Acreage, 3210; population, 490. Part of the surface is down. A Portland bed freestone, which furnished the material for Salisbury cathedral, is extensively quarried. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value, £328. The church is excellent, and was restored in 1877. John de Chilmark, the Archimedes of the time of Richard II., was a native.
