Description
Westham, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village of Westham, as its name indicates, was in Saxon days the west suburb of Pevensey, the great Roman gates of the city of Anderidon, within which Pevensey was built, going out towards the west. It has a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., and a post office under Hastings; money order and telegraph office, Pevensey. The parish comprises 5024 acres; population, 1140. There is a parish council consisting of eight members. The mansion of Glenleigh, situated in this parish, was built during the Elizabethan period, and is of considerable size. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £400 with residence. Patron, the Duke of Devonshire. The church is a large edifice of stone in various styles of architecture, and was thoroughly restored in 1877. An iron church was erected in 1877 by the Duke of Devonshire, and there are a Congregational chapel and almshouses.
