Description
Washington, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands 4 1/4 miles WNW of Steyning station on the L.B. & S.C.R. It has a post office under Pulborongh; money order and telegraph office, Storrington. Acreage of the civil parish, 3206; population, 838; of the ecclesiastical, 596. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. Highden House and Rowdell House are the chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £135 with residence. Patron, Magdalen College, Oxford. The church was rebuilt in 1867. On a farm in this parish in 1806 a crock of ancient coins was discovered, consisting of no less than 3000 pennies belonging to the reigns of Edward the Confessor and Harold II.; they were all forwarded to the British Museum.
