Poynings, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands at the foot of the Devil's Dyke, 1 mile from the Dyke station on the L.B. & S.C.R., and 6 miles NW of Brighton. It has a post office under Beeding; money order and telegraph office, Hurstpierpoint. Acreage of parish, 1642; population, 305. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor and nearly all the land belong to the Crown. The Devil's Dyke is a great chasm in the Downs, flanked by ground 685 feet high and commanding magnificent views, has a good hotel, and is a favourite resort of pleasure parties. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £250 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is of the 14th century and cruciform, and has a massive tower; it was thoroughly restored in 1890. There is a Baptist chapel.
