Description
Newtimber, a parish in Sussex, 2 1/2 miles SSW of Hurstpierpoint, and 2 1/4 from The Dyke station on the L.B. & S.C.R. Post town, Hassocks; money order and telegraph office, Hurstpierpoint. Acreage, 1721; population, 203. New-timber Place is an ancient brick mansion surrounded by a moat. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £206 with residence. The church is of the 13th century, has been restored and several lancet windows added in harmony with the old ones; has some stained glass and a carved oak Jacobean pulpit. A modern tower was annexed at west end about the year 1840, and a new vestry and organ chamber were added on the S side of the chancel in 1893.
