Description
Stoke St Gregory, a parish, with several hamlets, in Somerset, between the rivers Tone and Parret. It has a station of the name of Athelney on the G.W.R., 4 1/2 miles W of Langport, 9 from Taunton, and 9 from Bridgwater, and a post office under Taunton; money order and telegraph office, North Curry. Acreage, 4129; population of the civil parish, 1348; of the ecclesiastical, 995. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Bath and Wells; net value, £280 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Wells. The church, dedicated to St Gregory, is a Later English cruciform building having an octagonal central tower on arches with five bells, a spire, nave, two side aisles, two transepts, a chancel, and a fine W window. It has an ancient and beautifully carved pulpit, and was restored in 1888. An old yew tree with stocks under it is in the churchyard. There is a sundial over the porch door. There are two Baptist chapels.
