West Retford, Nottinghamshire

Retford, West, a parish in East Retford municipal borough, Notts, on the river Idle and the G.N.R., adjacent to East Retford, and communicating with that town by a bridge. Post. town and money order and telegraph office, Eetford. Acreage, 1000; population, 821. West Retford Hall was formerly the seat of the Denmans and the Emersons, and is now the seat of the Huntsman family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £251 with residence. The church was restored and enlarged in 1864, is in the Decorated style, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and N and S porches, and has a lofty square tower, with octagonal spire, and several stained windows. The chancel was lengthened in 1890. There are an hospital or alms-house, founded in 1664, for sixteen poor bachelors orwidowers, and other charities. The East Retford Cemetery is in this parish.
