Description
Thurgarton, a village and a parish in Notts. The village stands near the Nottingham and Lincoln branch of the M.R., 3 miles S of Southwell, and has a station with telegraph on the railway, and a post office under Southwell; money order office, Southwell. The parish comprises 2574 acres; population, 303. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to Trinity College, Cambridge. Thurgarton Priory is the chief residence. An Augustinian priory was founded here in 1187 by R. D'Ayncourt, and was given at the dissolution to the Coopers. The present priory, erected on the site of the ancient one, is the residence of the Bishop of Southwell. The living is a vicarage, with Hoveringham annexed, in the diocese of Southwell; gross value, £118 with residence. Patron, Trinity College, Cambridge. The church, formed out of the western portion of the old priory church, was restored in 1853, when a chancel and N aisle were added. It is Early English, and consists of chancel, nave, N aisle, N porch, and a lofty embattled tower.
