South Normanton, Nottinghamshire

Description
Normanton, South, a village and a parish in Derbyshire. The village stands 1 1/4 mile W of the boundary with Notts, and 1 1/2 ENE of Alfreton railway station, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Alfreton. The parish comprises 1934 acres; population, 4192. There is a parish council consisting of ten members. The manor belonged formerly to the Revells, and belongs now to the Radford and Coke families. A market is held on Saturday, and there are coalpits. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell ; net value, £270. The church is of the 14th century, in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, large and good, and, with the exception of the tower and N aisle, was entirely rebuilt in 1878; it contains a monument to the Revells. There are Wesleyan, Free, and Primitive Methodist chapels, and some charities.
