Description
Whittonstall, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Bywell St Peter parish, Northumberland, 5 miles NNE of Shotley Bridge, and 4 1/2 SSE of Stocksfield station on the N.E.R. There is a post office under Stocksfield (R.S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Ebchester. Acreage of the township, 2197; population, 153; of ecclesiastical parish, 580. The ecclesiastical parish comprises the townships of Newlands and Hedley. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Newcastle-on-Tyne; net value, £262. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Durham. The church was restored in 1832, and is a small building, consisting of apse, nave, and an embattled western tower. It was again restored, and a chancel built in 1895-96.
