Description
Thirlwall, a township in Greenhead parish, Northumberland, 4 miles WNW of Haltwhistle station on the N.E.R. Post town, Carlisle; money order and telegraph office, Gilsland railway station. Acreage, 8016; population, 600. Thirlwall Castle belonged to the Thirlwalls, gave a night's lodging to Edward I., passed to the Swinburnes and the Howards, and is now reduced to a gloomy ruin.
