Cramlington, a village and a parish in Northumberland,. .on the N.E.R., near the river Blyth, 6 miles SSE of Mor-peth, and 9 1/4 N of Newcastle-on-Tyne, with a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office (B.S.O.) The parish includes the hamlet of Shankhouse. Acreage, 3582 ; population of the civil parish, 5967; of the ecclesiastical, 4647. The Eidley and Taylor families, of Chipchase Castle, and the Storey family, of Ascot Hall, are lords of the manor. There are extensive collieries at East and West Cramlington, and at High Pit and Shankhouse. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Newcastle; net value, £248. Patron, the Bishop of Newcastle. The present church was built at a cost of about £3000 in 1868, and contains several stained memorial windows. There is a mission church and Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels and a colliery school at Shankhouse; Wesleyan, Free, and Primitive Methodist chapels and colliery schools in the village, and at East and West Cramlington.
