Description
Aydon-Castle, a township in Corbridge parish, Northumberland, 1 1/2 mile N of Corbridge. Acreage, 415 ; population, 18. A fortified house of the Aydon family was built here, in the time of Edward I., on the side of a ravine, and is now occupied as a farmhouse. It has the form of the letter H, with a tower at the end of each of the four wings. The walls are very thick, and one of the towers is upwards of 60 feet high. It was part of the ancient barony of the Baliols, from whom it passed to the Aydons. It is now the property of the Blackett family. Corbridge is the post town.
