Paulerspury, a village and a parish in Northamptonshire. The village stands near Watling Street, 2 miles N of the boundary with Bucks, 3 1/2 SSE of Towcester station on the L. & N.W.R., and o 1/2 SW of Roade. It has a post and money order office under Towcester; telegraph office, Towcester. The parish contains also the hamlet of Heathencote, and comprises 3038 acres; population, 1065. The parish council consists of eleven members. The manor, with Paulerspury Park, belongs to the Shedden family. Roman coins have been found. Pillow lace is made. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; net value, £530 with residence. Patron, New College, Oxford. The church is a building of stone in the Early English and later styles; was partly rebuilt in 1844, partly restored in 1855, and thoroughly renovated in 1886; comprises nave, aisles, and a chancel with N chapel; and contains a piscina, veryfine sedilia,and an altar-tomb of the 14th century. There are Congregational, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels. Professor Bernard, D.D., famous as an astronomer, linguist, and critic, was born here in 1638, and William Carey, D.D., the celebrated Indian missionary, in 1761.
