Description
Geddington, a village and a parish in Northamptonshire. The village stands on an affluent of the river Nen, 3 1/2 miles NE by N of Kettering Town, has a station on the M.R. 2 1/2 miles W from the village, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Kettering. An elegant cross stands in its centre; was erected by Edward I. to Queen Eleanor; has a base of eight steps, and a superstructure of three stages, and is about 40 feet high, and in good condition. A royal palace stood on a spot called Castle Close, and here Richard II. held a parliament for raising supplies towards the crusades. The parish comprises 2356 acres; population, 870. The manor belongs to the Duke of Buccleuch. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; net yearly value, c£153 with residence. Patron, the Duke of Buccleuch. The church is an ancient building in the Transition, Norman, and Later styles, and contains three stone seats, a piscina, and some monumental objects. There are a Baptist chapel and small charities.
