Welney, Norfolk

Welney, a civil parish in Norfolk, and an ecclesiastical parish partly in Norfolk and partly in Cambridgeshire, on the old Bedford river, 6 miles NE by E of Manea station on the G.E.R., 6 SE of Wisbech, and 10 ESE of March. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office under Wisbech. Acreage of the civil parish, 3485; population, 514. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, in Cambridgeshire, 559; in Norfolk, 535. There are two parish councils, one for the portion in each of the two counties, both having seven members. Extensive sheets of water for decoying wild ducks are here, and form fine skating ground in winter. A boat was found 8 feet below the river's bed, in 1635. Roman coins, urns, and other relics have been found. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £680 with residence. The church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, was built in 1848, and is in the Early English style. There are Baptist and Methodist chapels.
