Surlingham, Norfolk

Surlingham, a parish, with a village, in Norfolk, on the river Yare, 1 1/2 mile SSW from the parish church to Brundall station on the Norwich and Yarmouth section of the G.E.R., and 6 miles ESE of Norwich. It has a post office under Norwich; money order office, Blofield; telegraph office, Bruu-dall. Acreage, 1813; population, 409. There is a parish council consisting of seven members and a chairman. There is a broad of 70 acres in the parish. The manor belongs to the Barnes family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £90. The church is a small but ancient edifice of flint and stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and a western Norman round tower, the upper part of which is later and octagonal. There are remains of a second church still standing. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
