Description
Stow Bardolph, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands 1 1/2 mile ESE of Stowbridge station on the Ely and Lynn section of the G.E.R., and 2 miles NNE of Downham Market, and has a post office under Downham; money order and telegraph office, Downham. The parish includes Stowbridge, on the river Ouse, and comprises 6399 acres; population of the civil parish, 1318; of the ecclesiastical, with Wimbotsham, 1682. A large cattle fair is held on the Saturday after Whitsuntide. The manor, with Stow Hall, a modern mansion in the Elizabethan style standing in a fine park, belongs to the Hare family, who have been lords of the manor and chief landowners for over 300 years. The living is a rectory, united with Wimbotsham, in the diocese of Norwich; joint net value, £280 with residence. The church is a small building of ragstone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, N porch, and an embattled western tower and a large mortuary chapel of the Hares, containing many interesting tombs and memorials. There are Baptist, Free Methodist, and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities are worth about £170 a year, and there are six almshouses.
