Description
Southery, a parish, with a village, in Norfolk, on the river Ouse, 3 1/2 miles SE of Hilgay station on the Lynn and Ely section of the G.E.R., and 6 1/2 S of Downham Market. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Downham. Acreage, 3853; population of the civil parish, 1122; of the ecclesiastical, 1082. There is a parish coancil consisting of eleven members. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £685 with residence. The church, dedicated to St Mary, was built in 1858, and is a building of ragstone in the Early English style. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, and an institute with a library.
