Pentney, Norfolk

Description
Pentney, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands near the river Nar, 1 mile W of Narborough station on the Lynn and Dereham section of the G.E.R., and 6 1/2 miles N by W of Swaffham, and has a post office under Swaffham ; money order and telegraph office, Narborough. The parish comprises 2567 acres ; population, 498. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to the Thackeray family. An Augustinian priory was founded on what was called the Isle of Eva in the time of William I. by Robert de Vaux, and is now represented by a gateway. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich ; gross value, £48 with residence. The church is an ancient building of flint and stone, consisting of chancel, nave, S porch, piscina, aumbry, a holy-water stone, and an embattled western tower. Part of the nave is Norman. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels.
