Description
Horning, a village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands on the river Bure, 3 1/2 miles E from Wroxham station on the G.E.R., and 11 NE by E of Norwich, consists of two long straggling streets, with many good houses, and has a post office under Norwich; money order office, Ludham; telegraph office, Woodbastwick. The parish comprises 2609 acres; population, 415. Much of the land is marsh, inundated after rains and freshets, and formerly much haunted by ignis-fatuus. Holme Abbey, noticed in our article HOLMS OR COWHOLME, was here. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £195. Patron, the Bishop of Norwich. The church stands on a rising ground about 1 mile SE of the village, is an ancient edifice, with a lofty tower, and was restored in 1874 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are the chief landowners.
