Description
Hempnall, a pretty village and a parish in Norfolk. The village stands 3 1/2 miles SE from Flordon station on the G.E.R., and 7 NW from Bungay; was formerly a market-town, and had fairs on Whit-Monday and 11 Dec., which are now abolished. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office, under Norwich. The parish comprises 3659 acres; population, 884. An ancient burial-ground, British and Anglo-Saxon, was discovered in 1854, and some urns were taken from it to the British Museum. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; net value, £280. The church is an ancient building of flint in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and there are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Hempnall House is a chief residence.
