Description
Willoughby, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire, with a station on the G.N.R., 128 miles from London, and 3 SSE of Alford. There is a post office under Alford; money order and telegraph office, Alford. The village, supposed to occupy the site of a Roman station, gives with Eresby the title of Baron to the Earl of Ancaster, and was the birthplace of Captain John Smith of American notoriety. The parish includes seven hamlets, and comprises 5146 acres; population, 524, The manor belongs to the Earl of Ancaster. The living is a rectory, united with Sloothby, in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £520 with residence. The church is a building of sandstone in the Perpendicular style, and was restored in 1878-79. There are a Wesleyan chapel, an endowed school, and charities.
