Description
Stainby, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire, 2 miles SW of Colsterworth, 5 1/2 WSW of Corby station on the main line of the G.N.R., and 9 S from Grantham. There is a post office under Grantham; money order and telegraph office, Buckminster. Acreage, 1459; population of the civil parish, 141; of the ecclesiastical, 233. The manor, with most of the land, belongs to the Earl of Dysart Remains of a Roman villa were discovered some years ago. The living is a rectory, united with Gunby, in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £450 with residence. The church is a building of stone, chiefly in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, vestry, and an embattled western tower. It was thoroughly restored and partly rebuilt in 1865 at a cost of about £4800.
