Description
Gedney Hill, avillageandatownship-chapelryin Lincolnshire, 1 1/4 mile N from French Drove station on the G.N.R. The chapelry is in Gedney parish; was constituted a separate charge in the 18th century; lies contiguous to Cambridgeshire, 6 1/2 miles E of Crowland, and has a posfc and money order office under Wisbeach ; telegraph office, Postland (R.S.) Acreage, 1865; population, 374. Much of the surface is, fen. A moated fort of the Romans was here; a Roman road went hence to Spalding, and Roman coins have been found-The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; net yearly value, £120 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Lincoln. The church is' old, and was thoroughly restored and almost rebuilt in 1875. There is a Baptist chapel. A fair is held here on the second Monday in June.
