Description
Witton, a township, mostly within the county borough of Blackburn, and an ecclesiastical parish in Blackburn civil parish, Lancashire. The township lies half a mile N of Cherry Tree station on the L. & Y.R., and 1 1/2 mile W by S of Blackburn, and contains large cotton mills. It has a post and money order office (T.S.O.) under Blackburn; telegraph office, Blackburn. Acreage, 700; population, 5210. By the Blackburn Corporation Act of 1892 the part of the township within the borough became an integral part of the civil parish of Blackburn. The manor, with Witton Hall, belongs to the Feilden family. Billinge Hill rises to an altitude of 807 feet, and commands a very extensive view. The ecclesiastical parish extends beyond the township, and was constituted in 1842. Population, 4707. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £354 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Blackburn. The church was built in 1837, and is in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, S transept and E tower with spire.
