Withington, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Manchester parish, Lancashire. The township lies partly within the county borough of Manchester, 4 miles S of Manchester, has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Manchester, a station on the M.R., and includes Fallowfield, Ashfield, and Hougheud. Acreage, 2484; population, 14,213. There are numerous villas and other good residences. The Lancashire Independent College has been noticed in our article on HULME. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1841. Population, 5813. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Manchester; net value, £400 with residence. The church was built in 1841. There are several chapels.
