Description
Wavertree, a village, a township, and two ecclesiastical parishes in Childwall parish, Lancashire, but in 1895 included in Greater Liverpool. The village has been much improved under an urban district council, and has a station on the L. & N.W.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Liverpool. The township comprises 1838 acres; population, 13,764. The manor belongs to the Marquis of Salisbury. There are a large brewery, an iron foundry, and an extensive ropery. Wavertree Playground, a park of 108 acres, was presented to the district by an unknown donor. There is a handsome clock tower near the village green. The two ecclesiastical parishes are Holy Trinity and St Mary, the former constituted in 1828, the latter in 1855. Population, 8310 and 4010. The livings are rectories in the diocese of Liverpool; net value, £415 with residence, and £281 respectively. Patron of the former, the Vicar of Childwall; of the latter, the Bishop.
