Tunstall, a township and a parish in Lancashire. The township lies near the confluence of the rivers Lune and Greta, 1 mile from Melling station on the Furness and Midland railway, 3 miles S by W of Kirkby Lonsdale station on the L. & N.W.R., and 13 from Lancaster. It has a post office under Kirkby Lonsdale; money order office, Melling;, telegraph office, Melling (R.S.) Acreage, 1025 of land, and 51 of water; population of township, 119; of the ecclesiastical parish, 499. The parish also comprises the townships of Burrow-with-Burrow, Cantsfield, and Leek. Tunstall Manor belongs to the Brown-Lees family. Thurland Castle, Burrow Hall, and Leek Hall are chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; net value, £328 with residence. The church is Later English, was repaired in 1850, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and embattled western tower, and contains several ancient monuments. The vicarage of Leek is a separate benefice. There are two endowed schools.
