Description
Tarleton, a village and a parish in Lancashire. The village stands near the river Douglas, 1 1/2 mile from Hesketh Bank station on the West Lancashire railway,and 8 miles NNE of Ormskirk, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Preston. The parish is cut into three divisions, and comprises .5553 acres; population, 1772. The manor formerly belonged to the baronet family of Hesketh and Lord Lilford, but is now owned by some seventy freeholders. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £791 with residence. The church, dedicated to Holy Trinity, erected in 1888, is in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave, and aisles. The present church superseded one built in 1719, which still stands, but is now used chiefly as a mortuary chapel. There are a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, and an endowed school with £35 a year. Lord Lilford is lord of the manor, and owns about half the parish.
