Description
Rufford, a village and a parish in Lancashire. The village stands on the river Douglas, near the Liverpool and Preston railway, 5} miles NNE of Ormskirk, and has a station on the railway, a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ormskirk, and a cattle fair on 13 May. The parish contains also the hamlet of Holmes Wood, and comprises 3120 acres, of which 15 are water; population, 816. There is a parish council consisting of six members. The manor and most of the land belong to the Hesketh family, whose seat, Euf-ford Hall, stands in a park of 400 acres. The living is a rectory "in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £515 with residence. The church is of brick, built in 1869, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and tower with spire. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
