Description
Goosnargh, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Lancashire. The township is conjoint with News-ham; lies near the L.&N.W.R., 3 miles NE of Barton and Broughton station, and 6 3/4 NNE of Preston; and has a post and money order office, of the name of Goosnargh, under Preston 5 telegraph office, Whittingham. The parish excludes Newsham, but includes Whittingham and Inglewhite. Acreage of township, 8673; population, 1571; of the ecclesiastical parish, with Whittingham, 3255. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; net value, £236 with residence. Patron, Christ Church, Oxford. The church is old but good, consists of nave, chancel, and aisles, with square tower, and was restored in 1869. There are Congregational and Roman Catholic chapels. Bushell's hospital for decayed gentry, founded in 1735, with an edifice resembling a mansion, has £3000 per annum from endowment; Colborne's Free School has an endowment of £50 per annum; and other charities have about, £140 per annum.
