Description
Farnworth, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Wid-nes township, Lancashire. The village stands near the St Helen's and Runcorn Gap railway, 4 1/2 miles SE of Prescot, and has stations on the L. & N.W. and Cheshire Lines railways, and a post, money order, and telegraph office'under Wid-nes. The townships of Cronton, Cuerdley, Bold, and the northern part of Widnes township, are included in the) parish of Farnworth. Population of the parish, 6954, of which about one-half reside in Widnes township. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Liverpool; value, £305 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Prescot The church is ancient, and was reroofed in 1857 ; in 1890 a stained glass east window was put in at a cost of £400. The building was restored in 1894. There is a grammar school, founded and endowed in the reign of Henry VIII. William Smythe, the founder of Brasenose College, Oxford, and Bishop of Lincoln, was born in this district at Peel House. There is a Wesleyan chapel and a police station. Farringdon, a village and a parish in Hants. The village stands 2 1/4 miles S of Alton station on the L. & S.W.R., and has a post office under Alton. The parish comprises 2357 acres. Population, 517. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; gross value, £378 with residence. The-church is small, and there is a Wesleyan chapel.
