Description
Denton, a township and two chapelries in Manchester parish, Lancashire. The township lies on the river Tame, and has a station on the L. & N.W.R., 3 1/2 miles NNE of Stockport, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Manchester. Acreage, 1706 ; population, 8666. Coal is worked, and hat-making carried on. Denton Hall, now a farmhouse, was the seat of the Hollands. The chapelries of St Lawrence and Christ Church were constituted in 1839 and 1853 respectively. The livings are rectories in the diocese of Manchester. Net value of St Lawrence, £350; patron, the Earl of Wilton. Value of Christ Church, £270; patron, alternately the Crown and the Bishop; both with residence. There are Roman Catholic, Congregational, Uni-tarian, Wesleyan, and Methodist chapels, also a free library.
