Description
Colton or Coulton, a township and extensive parish in Lancashire. The township stands between the rivers Crake and Leven, under Furness Fells, 3 1/4 miles WSW of the foot of Lake Windermere, 2 miles from Green Odd station on the Furness railway, and 5 1/2 NNE of Ulverston. The parish includes also Haverthwaite and Rusland hamlets and Finsthwaite chapelry, and the first of these has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ulverston. Acreage, 14,322; population, 1774. The surface shares in the fine scenery of the Furness Fells and the lake country. Bobbin and hoop manufacture is carried on in this district. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, £258 with residence. Patrons, the Landowners. The church was restored in 1890. There is a Baptist chapel. A school has £50 from endowment.
