Chadderton, a township in Prestwich parish, Lancashire. The township lies on the river Irk and the Rochdale Canal, within the parliamentary borough of Oldham. Middleton Junction station on the L. & Y.R. is in the township. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office under Oldham. Acreage of township, including Butler Green and Coldshaw Green, and a detached portion between Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham, 3082; population, 22,087. The township is governed by a local board of 15 members. Chadderton Hall was formerly the seat of the Traffords; the grounds are now arranged as pleasure gardens. Most of the inhabitants are employed in cotton factories; but there are also collieries, chemical manufactories, and engineering works. Lawrence Chaderton, D.D., a noted divine, was born here in 1536. The livings of St Gabriel, St Matthew, St Luke, and Christ Church are vicarages in the diocese of Manchester; value, respectively, £240, £330, £150, and £335. Patrons of St Matthew's, alternately the Crown and the Bishop; of Christ Church, five trustees ; the other two are in the gift of the Bishop. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels.
