Description

Breightmet, a township and part of the ecclesiastical parish of Tonge-cum-Breightmet, Lancashire, 2 miles E of Bolton railway station. It has a post and telegraph office under Bolton; money order office, Bury New Road. Acreage of township, 873; population, 1720, The living of Tonge, with Breightmet, is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester ; gross value, £330 with residence, alternately in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Manchester. There is a modern church and a Wesleyan chapel. In this township there are cotton mills, bleachworks, and a colliery.
