Gaddesden, Great, a village and a parish in Herts. Thevillage stands on the river Gade, 3 miles NE of Great Berk-hampstead station on the L. & N.W.R., and 3^ NW of Hemel Hempstead, takes its name from the river Gade, and was known at Domesday as Gadesdene. The parish includes the hamlets of Gaddesden Row and Water End, and it has a post office under Hemel Hempstead; money order office, Hemel Hempstead; telegraph office, Water End. Acreage, i>i4149 ^ population, 871. Gaddesden Place is a fine mansion in the Italian style. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Sfc Albans; net yearly value, c£120 with residence. The church is Early English, with a modem tower, and contains monuments to the Halseys. There is a chapel of ease at iGaddesden Row, and there are also Baptist and Wesleyanchapels.
