Description
Farley Chamberlayne, a parish in Hants, 6 miles from Winchester station on the G.W.R. and L. & S.W.R. It includes Slackstead hamlet. Post town and money order and telegraph omce, Romsey. Acreage, 1725; population, 103. The manor house of the hamlet of Slackstead was the place in which Sternhold composed part of the metrical version of the Psalms. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester ; gross value, £340 with residence. The church is a substantial structure of flint and stone, with a square tower, and has some fine monuments to the St John family.
